Every four years.

Depp’s kindergarten class, Kinder 5, joined about a dozen other kinder 5s from other schools to have their own Juegos olímpicos.  Watching five year olds navigate the complexities of running in a straight line down a race track makes you realise how much there is to learn in life.  It was full of lane changes, false starts, false finishes and a few stumbles.

Rain clouds threatened and messages flew back and forth between parents if the event was happening or being postponed.  The group chat looked like it was competing for a gold medal for the most number of abbreviated messages crossing the ether.  Finally word came from the horse’s mouth that the event was on and someone was coming to pick us up.

Depp ran, hurdled, relayed, crawled, threw and jumped his way into a great morning.  At the end of it he came up to me and said, “Tengo hambre y necesito el baño.”  (I’m hungry and I need the toilet).  He was completely worn out and happy that he’d competed in his first Olympics.
